Saliva is highly alkaline and our stomach is highly acidic in nature. The stomach requires a certain amount of acid to digest food.  We want saliva to enter the stomach so that the alkaline effect of saliva stabilizes the excess acid in the stomach. 

One way of getting the salvia through the mouth to your stomach is the way you drink water. When you sit and sip your water slowly, the saliva in the mouth is carried to the stomach to stabilize the excess acid.

A glass of water 15 to 30 minutes before the meal and 15 to 30 minutes after the meal and preferably lukewarm or warm water, if you must drink water during your meal it should be like a just sprinkle of water to your stomach, large sips of water or too much water during meal would dilute your digestive acids which would in turn affect the digestive activity.
